Reagan-era Secretary of State George Shultz blasted President Obama Monday night for his scheduled July 2011 date to begin withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

Mr. Shultz, 89, made the unusually blunt remarks at a packed dinner for the International Republican Institute -- the GOP-aligned counterpart to the National Democratic Institute -- where he was receiving the organization's 2010 Freedom Award.

"You're out of your mind," he said at a question-and-answer forum, when asked his opinion of the president's drawdown date. "How can you say that 'if I haven't won by six or nine months from now, I'm leaving?' "

Mr. Shultz -- who earlier served under President Nixon as Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Labor and director of the Office of Management and Budget -- called for a prompt extension of the Bush tax cuts and expressed theoretical support for President Obama's goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

How can George Shultz imply that our armed forces may remain at war in Afghanistan for another 5, 10, 20 years? That's insane! We need to stop our permanent war machine. It's not doing us any good whatsoever and it's ridiculously expensive. We need to change the way relate to our enemies around the world. We need to knock the snot out of them as quickly and harshly as possible, and then withdraw and leave them rotting in a pile of smoking rubble. Whether all-out war takes 3 months or three years, we must fight war vigorously and get it over with. The hell with nation-building and peace-keeping! That's all BS designed to keep us permanently at war around the world. It's a losing strategy.

IF we are to leave in 2011, why should troops be in Afghanistan now ? Just what government is in Afghanistan, anyway ? Teaming up with Warlords might be a good idea as in Kandahar. Just what is our strategy ? Why is this action helping our internal security ? We are injuring our military with dangerous and often hidden wounds to the head. Could we be actually weakening ourselves strategically in pursuant of our goals ( ? ) in Afghanistan ?
